Saturation diving is a diving technique used in the Marine Oil, Gas and Renewable Energy industry that allows divers to reduce their risk of decompression sickness when working at great depth (usually up to 350 m) for extended periods of time. . Divers live under pressure in a saturation system, a hyperbaric environment at the surface, for several days or weeks during the project.
Saturation diving provides greater job economy and improved safety for divers. After working in water, they rest and live in a dry pressurized habitat on or attached to a Dive Support Vessel (DSV) at approximately the same pressure as the working depth; divers will typically work for 8 hours followed by 16 hours of rest in the DSV. The dive crew is compressed to working pressure only once at the beginning of the working period and is reduced to surface pressure once after the entire working period. Unplanned exposure to normal atmospheric pressures will quickly result in serious illness and death.
